While going over the specs. on the 4200 and 2710 I noticed a huge difference in weight. Over 900lbs. worth. Where is the extra weight on the JD4200 coming from? Any imput would be appreciated, Thanks.

The John Deere 4000 Series does not have a consistent frame size throughout like the B Series Kubotas. The B's are the smallest of Kubotas compacts the B2100 probably lines up best with the 4100, while I would say you would have to compare the L3010 to the Deere 4200 and 4300. If you do that you will see little weight difference and little difference in capabilities. While we are all excited about the B2710, the excitement is really based on the fact that it will probably be the most powerful machine that can still be used for grass mowing as its major responsibility without giving up too much of what the heavier machines like the 4200 and L3010 can do! And that comes from its being a small framed lightweight machine. ....

The 4200 through 4600 JDs are constructed totally different from the Kubota B series. The B series are made of frame rails with components (engine, transmission, etc.) bolted to them. If light weight is desireable, then the advantage is light weight. The disadvantage is a frame that may not be quite as well suited to heavier jobs like loader use. The JD 4200-4600 are constructed like the New Holland Boomers and 1320-1920 tractors and Kubota L series in that the frame is really just a series of castings (engine block, clutch housing, transmission, etc) bolted together. That's what contributes all the weight. Advantages include greater strength for loader work & traction. Disadvantages include more time consuming access for certain repair jobs such as clutch repacement. Neither tractor is better or worse than the other from the weight differences. It's just a matter of your primary use for the machine. More weight (all other things being equal) provides greater traction, and less weight (all other things being equal) is less likely to cause turf damage. I mowed for years with a Ford 1720 (2700 lbs w/o mower) and caused minimal turf damage. My current tractor (B2400) causes almost no turf damage at all, but pushing large amounts of snow or dirt requires careful planning due to the lower weight and traction. ....

If I'm not mistaken, the B2710 differs from the rest of the new B series tractors in that it NOT constructed with "frame rails". The chassis on the B2710 is virtually identical to the B2150 which is the standard engine block to clutch housing to trans to diff castings, which IMO is the reason for the excitement over the B2710 and not necessarily the HP although that is nice as well. I do believe the castings, however, are not iron but some other alloy, which is the reason for the lighter weight. ....

Thanks Nate, you explained the answer to my post really well. The engineering aspects you explained were interesting. I have not seen a b2710 yet but what you explained made sense where all that extra weight came from. Thanks again Mike ....

Wasted iron? Man you don't have a clue what you are talking about kubota man. If there is any "wasted iron" on the 4000 series please point me in the direction where this so called "wasted iron" is! It sounds like you have a beef with the color green, you MIGHT know something about kubotas but you know ZERO about tractors in general. The 4000 series is engineered with strength in mind and believe me there is NO wasted iron on the 4000 series. ....

Dennis, How can you compare a L3010 to a JD 4200 is'nt there a big difference in horsepower and price range. I would think it would make more sence to line up the 4200 with the new B2710 as they are more comparable in price and h.p. Although the deere is a much stouter and heavier design. ....

The 4200 has 26 hp while the 4300 has 32 hp, that's why I lined them up with the L3010, which I think is 30 hp the replacement to last years L2900. These three tractors all weigh over 2500 pounds but less than 3000 pounds. Last year you could buy the L2900 GST 4wd for about 16800, to my recollection that was close to the Deere prices. What prices do you have on the Deere? ....
